Are you conducting sustainability research at UvA? And would you like to be affiliated with USP and stay in touch with fellow sustainability researchers? Then join us as an associate! The list of USP Associates is already quite impressive, but we would like to invite many more UvA sustainability researchers to join our community.

So if your name is not on the list yet but you are conducting sustainability research at UvA and would like to be affiliated with USP, then join us as an associate! Please get in touch with Dylan Suijker (d.p.l.suijker@uva.nl) indicating your discipline and research area (in a maximum of 10 words).

Regular meetings & showcases of projects funded with USP Grants

Being an associate of USP will give you access to the latest news on UvA sustainability research and bring you in contact with fellow researchers working in the same area.  USP regularly organizes meetings on certain topics. This year’s annual event on December 13th was held at the Maagdenhuis.

Peter Schall, Luc Franssen, and Candida Leone showcased their inspirational projects, all funded by USP. They are, respectively: Algae for circular economy: enhancing yield by solar spectral shaping (USP Midsize Grant 2023-2025); Regulation of environmental sustainability in global supply chains through big data and modelling (USP Seed Grant 2023-2024); Energy Labels for Ecologically Sustainable Digital Services (USP Seed Grant 2023-2024).

Next Vanessa Harris, from Amsterdam UMC, introduced us to the Springs project, Tackling the effects of climate change on diarrheal diseases by the Springs Consortium, which consists of 15 partner organizations, including the UvA, and spans 10 countries.

UvA’s footprint

We also discussed how we can use USP's research to further UvA's own environmental footprint reduction efforts.  And we concluded that for the coming year, we will work on:

  • Data (making the black boxes white) (making data insightful and accessible & collect more and better quality data);
  • Identify opportunities for living labs at the UvA;
  • Continue with the initiated measures with full energy, while keeping an eye on measures that have a positive impact on various themes.

The plan is to have our next event on UvA’s ecological footprint in 2 years' time in a so-called UvA living lab.
